Benefits and downside of fasting

Researchers identified a signaling pathway in mice that boosts intestinal stem cells' regeneration abilities after fasting. When cancerous mutations occurred during this regenerative period, mice were more likely to develop early-stage intestinal tumors.

DNA replication mechanism in pluripotent stem cells

Embryonic stem (ES) cells are pluripotent stem cells that can produce all cell types of an organism. ES cells proliferate rapidly and have been thought to experience high levels of intrinsic replication stress. However, a recent report challenges this assumption by providing a detailed molecular investigation of replication dynamics in these cells.

Human cells for cardiovascular research

The innermost layer of blood vessels is formed by endothelial cells, which in turn play a role in the development of diseases of the cardiovascular system. Human endothelial cells are therefore required for the 'in vitro' investigation of the causes of these diseases. Researchers have now established a highly efficient, cost-effective and reproducible way to generate functional endothelial cells from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) for tests in cell culture dishes.

Fighting leukemia by targeting its stem cells

Acute myeloid leukemia is one of the deadliest cancers. Leukemic stem cells responsible for the disease are highly resistant to treatment. A team has made a breakthrough by identifying some of the genetic and energetic characteristics of these stem cells, notably a specific iron utilization process. This process could be blocked, leading to the death or weakening of these stem cells without affecting healthy cells. These results pave the way for new therapeutic strategies.

Study points at novel approach to treat Group 3 medulloblastoma

A team of researchers has identified and located a population of stem-like cells that initiates and maintains Group 3 medulloblastoma (Gr3-MB) in the developing brain. Gr3-MB is one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer in children and is associated with metastatic spread and poor survival. The researchers showed that eliminating the small population of stem-like cells present in Gr3-MB tumors led to tumor shrinkage in preclinical models. Although more research is needed, this novel approach may lead to new ways to treat children with Gr3-MB.
