Death penalty for Thai woman accused of murdering 14 friends with cyanide

A woman in Thailand has been sentenced to death in the first of a string of cases in which she is accused of murdering 14 friends with cyanide.

Police say Sararat, dubbed Am Cyanide by Thai media, had a gambling addiction and targeted friends she owed money to, then stole their jewellery and valuables.

The court in Bangkok found Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, 36, guilty of putting poison in a wealthy friend's food and drink while they were on a trip last year.

Relatives of the friend refused to accept she died of natural causes and an autopsy found traces of cyanide in her body. Police arrested Sararat and uncovered other similar deaths going back to 2015. One person she allegedly targeted survived.

Sararat travelled with her friend Siriporn Khanwong, 32, to Ratchaburi province, west of Bangkok in April 2023, where they took part in a Buddhist protection ritual at a river, police said.

Siriporn collapsed and died after a meal with Sararat, who made no effort to help her, investigators said.

Traces of cyanide were found in Siriporn's body and her phone, money and bags were missing when she was found, police said.

"You got justice, my child. Today, there is justice in this world," Siriporn's mother, Thongpin Kiatchanasiri, said in front of the courtroom, as she held a photo of her daughter.

Thongpin said that out of anger, she could not stand to look at Sararat, who she said was smiling when the sentence was being read. Sararat pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.

Her former husband, an ex-police officer, and her lawyer, were handed prison terms of one year and four months, and two years respectively, for hiding evidence to help her evade prosecution. They had also pleaded not guilty before Wednesday's sentencing.

The ex-husband, Vitoon Rangsiwuthaporn, gave himself up last year. Police said he most likely helped Sararat poison an ex-boyfriend, Suthisak Poonkwan.

Sararat was also ordered to pay Siriporn's family two million baht ($57,667; £45,446) in compensation.

Cyanide starves the body's cells of oxygen, which can induce heart attacks. Early symptoms include dizziness, shortness of breath and vomiting.

It can lead to lung injury, coma and death within seconds when consumed in large amounts, but even small doses can still be very harmful.

Its use in Thailand is heavily regulated and those found to have unauthorised access face up two years in jail.

Footage appears to show aftermath of strike in Kursk

The BBC is working to verify images claiming to show the aftermath of a Ukrainian strike using a UK-supplied Storm Shadow missile in the Russian border region of Kursk.

Much of the footage is being shared on Telegram - a social media network popular in Russia and which has often been used to carry footage of the conflict.

Footage reviewed by BBC Verify located one clip to the town of Maryino - a small village in Kursk. A reverse-image search of keyframes from the video - in which you can hear multiple explosions and see a plume of smoke - found that the clip first surfaced online at 13:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Another clip showing damage to a building also appears to have been first posted to Telegram on Wednesday. But importantly, neither of the clips show a direct strike by a missile.

Two Majors - a pro-war blogger popular in Russia - posted what it said were photos of missile debris. Again, a reverse image search showed that no earlier copies of the images have appeared online.

BBC Verify has shown the photos to weapons experts but they have not yet confirmed whether they came from a Storm Shadow.

The Journey of 4 Sisters Over 4 Decades

In the summer of 1975, photographer Nicholas Nixon was visiting his wife’s family when, on an impulse, he asked his wife and her three sisters if they would pose for a photograph. The result was a striking black-and-white image of the four women, linked by their elbows, standing against a soft backdrop of trees and lawn. Their relaxed posture and luminous appearance captured not just the simplicity of the moment, but also the quiet bond between them as sisters. A year later, while attending the graduation of one of the sisters, Nixon decided to recreate the moment. He asked them

The naming ceremony for the IDF's sixth submarine was held at the "Kiel" shipyard in Germany,

Joint statement by the IDF Spokesperson and the Israel Ministry of Defense Spokesperson:

Amid the Ongoing War, the IDF Reveals Its Sixth Submarine—INS “Drakon”, Which Will Serve as a Strategic Combat Asset Across the Various Operational Arenas

Today (Tuesday), the naming ceremony for the IDF's sixth submarine was held at the "Kiel" shipyard in Germany, led by the Commander in Chief of the Israeli Navy, VADM David Saar Salama, the Israel Ministry of Defense Deputy Director General and Head of the Defence Procurement Directorate (DPD), Zeev Landau, and the Ambassador of Israel to Germany, Mr. Ron Prosor, alongside representatives from the Israel Ministry of Defense and the Israel Navy, who are accompanying the project with representatives from the shipyard in Germany.

Alongside the naming ceremony for the submarine, the commencement of the construction process for the IDF's future submarines, of the "Dakar" class, was marked. These submarines are scheduled for delivery at the beginning of the next decade.

As part of the ceremony, the submarine was officially named INS (Israeli Navy Ship) "Drakon". The name "Drakon" (Dragon)—a mythical sea creature symbolizing strength, uniqueness, and power—was chosen because it contains the Hebrew letters ד׳, ק׳, ר׳ (Dakar), thus commemorating the legacy of the submarine INS Dakar and its crew.

The submarine is scheduled to be delivered to the IDF in 2025, after which it will sail to its home port and join its sister vessels as an operational submarine in the Israeli Navy.

The INS "Drakon" submarine is of the "Dolphin AIP" class and equipped with unique systems, including groundbreaking technologies that expand the range of the IDF's capabilities across various arenas.

From the remarks of the Commander in Chief of the Israeli Navy, VADM David Saar Salama: “INS Drakon will serve as a cornerstone in ensuring the security of the State of Israel. Seen and unseen, it will dwell in distant and hidden realms for extended periods. This submarine is an additional force multiplier for the capabilities and strength of the Israeli Navy, the IDF, and the State of Israel—facing complex challenges at the most strategic and crucial level for Israel.
At this time, significant transformations are taking place in the submarine flotilla. Operational methods are improving, the range of operational capabilities is being enhanced and expanded, and integration with security bodies is accelerating. All of these place the submarine flotilla at the forefront of the campaign for Israel's security, as the extended arm of the IDF.
With the addition of INS Drakon to the depths of our operations, our extended arm grows significantly in length and strength.”

From the remarks of the Israel Ministry of Defense Deputy Director General and Head of the Defence Procurement Directorate (DPD), Zeev Landau: “Today we are marking not only the launch of the Drakon submarine but also the close security ties between Israel and Germany, a relationship founded on shared values and a mutual aspiration for a safer future. Together, we have created a vessel that will strengthen the Israeli Navy and bring powerful and essential capabilities for the defense of the State of Israel. On behalf of the Israel Ministry of Defense, I congratulate the Israeli Navy, which today marks a new chapter in force design, and extend my gratitude to our partners in the German Ministry of Defense and TKMS. We are successfully completing a major phase in the development and production project and are moving forward to the next stages.”

From the remarks of the Ambassador of Israel to Germany, Ron Prosor: “The launch of the submarine is a model of the synergy between security and diplomacy. The geo-strategic situation requires moral clarity—as well as a long-term strategy. The launch of the submarine is another cornerstone in the strategic relationship between Israel and Germany, which face similar challenges and share common opportunities.”

The troops dismantled terrorist infrastructure, eliminated terrorists, located ready-to-fire launchers, and confiscated large amounts of weaponry and terrorist equipment, some of which were found within civilian structures.

Yesterday (Monday), the Hezbollah terrorist organization fired approximately 200 projectiles into Israeli territory.

Over the past day, the IAF struck approximately 100 terror targets in Lebanon, including terrorist infrastructure sites, weapons storage facilities, dozens of terrorists, and the launchers that launched projectiles toward the Upper Galilee, Western Galilee, and the Haifa Bay areas.
Additionally, yesterday (Monday), the IAF struck a terrorist site in the Beqaa area that contained underground infrastructure intended for the launch of projectiles toward the State of Israel.

IDF: Activity of the Kfir Brigade in the Area of Beit Lahia

The 162nd Division are continuing their divisional operation in the area of Jabaliya. Over the past week, troops of the Kfir Brigade have been conducting raids to neutralize the threat in the area of Beit Lahia.

During the operation, the troops located and dismantled several rocket launcher sites aimed at firing toward the communities near the Gaza Strip. The troops also located Hamas uniforms, military equipment, AK-47 rifles, and weapon components.

In close-quarters combat, terrorists who had barricaded themselves in a building from which they conducted gunfire and terror activities against the troops in the area were eliminated. After eliminating the terrorists, the building, which served as their military headquarters, was dismantled.

So far, in the brigade's operations in the area, the troops have eliminated dozens of terrorists in close-quarters combat and air strikes, and have dismantled dozens of terror infrastructure.

During the incident, dozens of Israeli civilians hurled stones toward the soldiers, who responded with riot dispersal means. Israel Border Police forces apprehended two suspects.

The IDF strongly and unequivocally condemns any use of violence against IDF soldiers and calls for the instigators to be brought to justice. The IDF will continue to operate to maintain security and order in Judea and Samaria.

IDF: Today (Tuesday), the IAF conducted intelligence-based strikes on Hezbollah terrorist targets in the Dahieh area of Beirut. The targets include command centers, weapons production sites, and additional Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure.

The Hezbollah terrorist organization systematically embeds its terrorist infrastructure into the heart of civilian areas. This is a further example of Hezbollah's cynical exploitation of Lebanese civilians as human shields.

Prior to the strikes, numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including using surveillance and precise intelligence information and issuing advance warnings to the civilian population in the area.
